A bumper edition, reporting on the Optimist National Championships - with great feedback on the week, including our magnificent volunteers. THANK YOU ONE AND ALL - we can't put on events like this without you. Also looking forward to Largs Regatta Week, Friday 26th August to Saturday 3rd September, and its full social programme.
A BIG thanks to all of our volunteers and staff over the week, also the many weeks leading up to the Nationals, and the Saturday clean-up ably assisted by the rowers - the feedback has been really good from the Oppi competitors, parents, and officials. The event could not happen without you. I was in the fortunate position to be part of the event management team, also Regatta fleet beachmaster, so got to hear lots of feedback at the daily briefing and 1/1 contact with - the RO, Jury, Safety, parents, kids, etc, etc.
We've had an amazing turnout from our club volunteers for the Optimist Event and can't thank them enough. But some of them have have already been here, or will be here, for over a week and we don't want to 'push our luck with them' (!).
So we would be very grateful if anyone who has not been helping this week can spare one hour this Saturday morning, 6th August to help clear up after the Optimist National Championships?
Some great socials being lined up to compliment the sailing.
We're delighted to announce that Olympic Medalist and Swimming Commentator Rob Woodhouse will be our After Dinner Speaker at the 2016 Regatta Dinner.
Rob won a bronze medal at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics in the 400m individual medley and he is widely regarded as the best Australian medley swimmer of his generation. He has now just returned from commentating at the Rio Olympics so he can resume his day job of running a sports management company for some of GB's biggest sporting stars.
We had a fantastic turnout of 25 or so volunteers to get the championship slipway ready for this season's major event, the Optimist National Championships at the end of July. Click on "read more" to see more information and photographs of the morning. The white lines are now also done.
The seaweed was 6-9" thick in large areas, so it was a pretty major challenge, but after 3 hours of scraping and shovelling, the slip was pristine, and ready for the 250-300 boats we expect in a week or so. Many, MANY thanks to everyone who helped, and in particular to all our friends in the Firth of Clyde Coastal Rowing Club, to Largs Yacht Haven for the tractor and crew, and our office administrator Julia for her chuck wagon and very welcome refreshments!
Was a challenging weekend for the RO and competitors - so called Easterlies being light and strong in the gusts, also from north and south. That said, 5 races were completed and the Champions being the National 18 crew from Findhorn, runners up last year, and 2nd Calum Bell in his Topper and the first singlehanded.
Updates and news on dinghy sailing and cruising group activities, safety boat and summer dinghy courses, quiz nights, CalMac sponsoring Largs Regatta Week - and volunteers please for the Optimist Nationals, end July into early August.
