Our new Club Steward Avril Leslie had a swift baptism with the most popular Quiz Night we have ever had, also a real challenge as few people had signed up in advance to eat! Only 30 had booked by Thursday, and she finally served around 60 on the night! Anyway, well done Avril, and it was great to see so many members at the quiz, a closely fought event (going to a tie break) presented by John and Jim from our friends and group members the Firth of Clyde Coastal Rowing Club.
Day Skipper / Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster navigation classes

Night classes for the RYA Day Skipper and Yachtmaster Coastal / Offshore Shorebased Courses. The Day Skipper course (Monday evenings) provides a sound introduction to navigation, chart work and other aspects of boating. The RYA Yachtmaster Coastal / Offshore course (Wednesday evenings) with exams is for more experienced sailors with an understanding of the principles introduced at Day Skipper level.
The courses run for 20 weeks, 7-9pm over the winter period, in our clubhouse. The cost of each course is £220 (includes RYA packs). To register please contact Cumbrae on 01475 530 757, or e-mail email@example.com, or turn up on registration night, Monday 28th September.
On Sunday 20th September Largs SC ran its Sunday racing as part of the Bart's Bash, a world-wide handicap race, commemorating the life of Olympic gold medallist Andrew (Bart) Simpson.
We were supported in spirit by Mark Andrews, one of Largs SC's most successful sailors - former Finn World Junior champion, long time training partner of Ben Ainslie, and a friend of Bart's. Mark will be sailing on the south coast, under his LSC burgee, and had this to say:

Halloween supper with cruising group log competition prizegiving

Great turnout at the Halloween Party. Members enjoyed a themed evening with the club decorated with all manner of spooky items. Fun and games included the Cruising group "Blooper" award, a Halloween short quiz, best costume award, Halloween "who am I" and best Pumpkin award. Great buffet provided by our new Club Steward Avril.
Sunday was this year's celebration of the world's largest sailing event, Bart's Bash, in memory of the tragic death of Olympic gold medallist Andrew "Bart" Simpson in training for the 2013 America's Cup. Last year's first event had 30,734 sailors in 60 countries sailing over 50,000 miles, The target for this year is to have the biggest sporting event, so both of our sunday races were entered. A very busy and successful year for the LSTA and their many volunteers, with 105 young people in training through this year, (plus a further 31 in the youth sailing week in August, plus ten adults!), and last weekend's cadet regatta.
