Subject to the anticipated changes to guidance for sport activity, we are in the process of planning  to run the annual Youth and Junior Champs in a limited format in light of the Covid pandemic.

The proposed event across the weekend of 26/27 Sept will be the RYA Scotland Junior Championships for sailors in optimists and toppers.

What an evening it would have been to close out in Largs.

Thu 24th Jun 2021 to Sun 27th Jun 2021

Looking forward to the best Nationals ever!

After the success of the June quiz on Zoom, quizmaster Steven Low hosted another fun evening on Friday, 10th July, with 17 teams taking part, from the south coast of England to Aberdeenshire! The clear winners were more local, Team Heretic from West Kilbride, so congratuations to them!

The July 50:50 draw was held between rounds, with the winners £60 - number 52, £40 - number 43, £30 - number 8, and £20 - number 13.

The next quiz is confirmed for Friday 14th August. More details in how to participate nearer the time!

Stay safe, everyone!

Great news! We have taken ownership of our new rib, Theme. It will be arriving in Largs very soon and there will be a formal launch and naming ceremony in due course. Theme is named after our late, former Commodore Finlay Forsyth's Loch Long and of course, was destined to take part in a busy series of events this year for young sailors, something Finlay strongly supported. Theme and the rest of Largs Sailing Club will be ready to welcome you as soon as we can!

Some significant changes come into effect on Friday 3rd July, principally affecting our cruising members at this stage - leisure travel distance restrictions are lifted, plus overnight stays on your boat, and overnight anchoring, are now permitted. The 2 metre restriction remains on social distancing in Scotland, and there are also restrictions on who you can have aboard. The executive committee are working with RYAS and other clubs on how these guidelines affect the resumption of wider club activities. We are carrying out neccessary risk assesments and will update members on our schedule for resuming activities and reopening the clubhouse as soon as possible.

Full details of the new situation can be found in the RYA Scotland guidance note, here

Our club moved to its present location at Largs Yacht Haven in 1999, but for the previous 63 years, we used Cairnie's Quay slipway on the Broomfields (south promenade) of Largs for access to the many boats moored in the bay, and dinghy racing. There are still some relics of our history at the slipway, including the frame used for race signals, as described in the attached article.

Largs Sailing Club

Largs Sailing Club was founded in 1936, and is now based in a modern clubhouse in Largs Yacht Haven, just to the south of Largs town centre.

The Club organises a range of activities for all ages and abilities, from the teaching of beginners by the LSTA to hosting large national and world championship events. We also run regular racing for dinghies and keelboats. Our active cruising section (sail and power) organises cruises in company around the Clyde and the west of Scotland, and holds regular talks and skills workshops. Throughout the year, we hold quiz nights, talks with guest speakers, and themed evenings including dances and parties.

Our waterfront location gives us the best view in the marina, as can be seen from the LSC WebCam. Our Lookout Lounge has a well-stocked bar and good bar food at reasonable prices, making it a welcoming port of call for members and guests.

Rooms in our clubhouse are available to hire for any occasion - business meetings, charity lunches, birthday parties, weddings, sail training, art exhibits etc., and are complete with wireless internet and AV equipment. Our fully licensed bar and catering facilities can meet your most exacting requirements.

COVID-19 UPDATE: CLUB REOPENING

Following the relaxation of lockdown measures presented by the Scottish First Minister on 10th July, LSC is beginning to reopen clubhouse facilities for members in line with RYAS guidance.

At present, we are only able to open on a very limited basis, and are providing toilet facilities on the ground floor at the weekends until 1700hrs. However, we request that you do not use this as a changing area. The coffee machine and snack selection are available in the hallway, along with hand sanitisers and wipes. The main changing rooms and upstairs remain closed for the moment, but are constantly reviewing how and when we can increase facilities open to members and work towards a more normal club experience for all. All changes will be posted here and on our various social media groups.

We ask you to continue respecting the constraints we are still needing to keep in place to enable you all to keep safe and keep sailing. As soon as we can open up more of your clubhouse and offer more activities, we will!

NEWSLETTERS - CATCH UP ON THE ARCHIVE!

As regular club activities have been suspended since lockdown began at the end of March, the last "normal" newsletter was on 1st March, which reported on a breezy(!) Harken New Year race, standing room only at the first winter cruising talks, and our stalwart maintenance volunteers getting the clubhouse shipshape for the new season, including shower upgrades.

Our dinghy sailors have been social sailing and informally racing for some weeks, and our cruising sailors and motor boaters are increasingly active, now that overnighting aboard is permitted. We all look forward to a return to full activities as the coronavirus situation allows. In the mean time, enjoy looking back in the newsletter archive!
