Club Champs

Alastair Leicester has kindly offered to be RO for the club champs this year.
The most suitable looking weekend is 12-13 November.
Options are:
Sat / Sun (in place of winter series race 9 & 10) / Both
Handicap racing as usual / Fleet racing in visions with 2 sails / match racing in visions with gennakers
(The latter 2 might be better as a separate test event)
Any preferences?

Club Championships

Hi Martin,

I feel that the club championships should be a cummulative thing run on the best results over the year/ combination of series/ combination of nominated events. It maybe too late to do this for this year.

If the championship is done on one day then the weather and the courses of the day have as much effect as the skill of the winner over other competitors.

As for a date for the event, it seems late in the year for the club championship as typically turnout falls as the year goes on.

It's maybe a bit lame but could we retrospectively nominate the first two races of each series (wendesday and sunday) and add the points, if there is a clear winner between fast and slow handicap then the choice is easy, if not it is the helmsman/ crew who won the most series.

Next year we ought to try to make winning the Club Championship an apirational thing. The trophy is after all, stunning and the best the club has.

.............. that's my view anyway!

I am of split opinion over whether the Championships should be an annual 'event' or take into account more of the season. There is something to be said for both.

But I think we should do something to seize the opportunity Alistair has given us this year. We have often chatted about a series of one design races in the club boats, so my vote would be go for it this year and then see what the reaction is from the members as to what we do next year.

Hi Guys,

Like the idea of a club champs event and if the only weekend now is the Nov dates suggested so be it, it would be a shame to take some form of average points over the season and not take advantage of the event and try to get people afloat again. However for next seasons calendar it would probably be a more successful and better attended event in October rather than Nov.

I think the idea of using club boats to sail boat for boat would be interesting but need to address how you manage the mix of single handers and 2 man boats. Or in our own boats do the weekend of varied courses each day to even out the differences for symmetrical and asymmetrical and white sailed boats.

I appreciate where you are

I appreciate where you are coming from Martin, but I see using aggregate results as a last resort, as it doesnt really encourage participation. Having a dedicated event last year astonished me - we had 19 entries and a lot were youths - they probably came out because it was an opportunity for some quality racing and the result was a celebration of LSC racing - it was great to see so many members racing at the same time and it would be nice to build on this.

I am going off the idea of club boats, as only 2 Visions have gennakers. There is certainly potential to do something like this in the future though - maybe even as a fundraiser to help fit out some more visions with gennakers - ?

Martin et al,

I still feel that the club championships should be representative of the best sailor in all conditions in the club and as such should be cummulative.

My experience is that a season long cummulative series for the best trophy and prizes of the year encourages the competetive guys to sail more often and to cancel out less often. Such events create healthy season long competition. The series can be calculated to give enough discards to not penalise those who work away often, or for holidays.

I'm pretty sure that I could get product prizes to the value of £250 - 1st/ £100-00 2nd and £50-00 third prizes, plus some general freebies for all entrants.

It would also be fun to see if we could get a team race series in the Visions for 2012

As for this years event I'm not convinced we'll get a great turnout for a two day event in October, but give it a go, there's really not much choice at this time in the year and it's good of Alistair to volunteer to run it.

We can ask other at the weekend

Cheers ML
